Wall Cervical Traction Unit

This is an essential part of any chiropractic home care. It is simple and easy to use. Designed by experts in the field of spinal correction, it drastically reduces the time it takes to restore healthy cervical curvature and takes only minutes to maintain it.

New: Padded door stop. No more damaged doors.

Instructions:
1. Perform cervical warm-up, joint lubrication, and cartilagenourishment exercises (twist, flex and extend head/neck).
2. Adjust the connection so that the curved piece hangs slightly lower than the back of the head.
3. Pull handles down until stopped by curved neck piece with handles at shoulder height. Elbows and knees are against the wall, and feet are shoulder-width apart.
4. Place curved piece behind neck and padded handle under chin or on forehead. Place one hand on each handle end, with palms toward face.
5. Hold handles firmly; relax the knees so some body weight is supported by the traction. Traction is applied and controlled by bending the knees.

7. Add deep diaphragmatic breathing with traction, then exhale completely and forcibly when the traction is released.

Acupuncture As A Remedy for Back Pain

Acupuncture As A Remedy for Back Pain by David A Griffiths.

dreamstimefree_94327

If you suffer from back pain you probably would not consider acupuncture as a treatment until you have exhausted many other alternatives. However, acupuncture is a type of ancient Chinese medicine that’s been around for over 2,500 years and throughout this time it has been used for back pain relief, increasingly so in these modern times. While it is not traditionally a part of western medicine, nowadays your doctor is quite likely to send you for this treatment if you are suffering from back or neck pain either persistantly or due to accident or injury.

If you are going to have this therapy you may want to know a little about how it works. The general belief is that the body has 20 energy flow patterns called meridians or pathways. Through these pathways it is thought that the life force or vital energy flows, this is known as the qi (it is pronounced chee) and is considered to be essential to maintain good health. There are over 2,000 points on our bodies that connect with these pathways and it is at these points which the hair-thin needles are inserted, this is done in varying specific combinations depending on the treatment required. These actions are believed to either correct the flow of qi or to reinforce it.

Even though it cannot be proven that this works as a type of pain relief, it is thought that as a result the central nervous system is stimulated. Most patients say that they get a pins and needles sensation on the insertion of the needles and indeed into the duration of the treatment, which usually lasts about 15 to 30 minutes. Some people report that they feel energised or even very relaxed so it appears as if the effect can be is somewhat different depending on the individual.

The acupuncturist will use up to 20 metallic needles during a treatment session and the depth they are inserted is dependent upon the area, deeper muscular or fatty areas need more penetration and the scalp for example would be just below the surface. The practitioner may turn the needles one way or another depending on what they are trying to achieve, in my personal experience they were turned on insertion, then again about half way through the treatment. At no point is the treatment painful, there is a mere sensation of the needles going in and they do not feel sharp at all, this is because unlike needles used for injections, an acupuncture needles tip come to a smooth point without sharp edges. They are also very thin, about 20 times thinner than a hypodermic needle. In my experience the most troublesome part of the treatment is lying in the same position without moving for up to 30 minutes, especially if you suffer from back pain or similar.

Although there are many medical experts who believe acupuncture is an effective way to treat certain conditions such as back pain, there is no true consensus. Some adhere to the theories of qi and meridians whilst others attribute acupunctures benefits to the biological changes that are brought about in the body as a result of treatment. Needless to say there will always be the sceptics who deny that acupuncture has any effect at all, but in my opinion if you are suffering from ongoing back pain it is certainly worth trying.

Battling Chronic Headaches? Understanding Migraine, Tension, Cluster and Sinus Headaches. Maximized Living Maximized Living Blog

Battling Chronic Headaches? Understanding Migraine, Tension, Cluster and Sinus Headaches. Maximized Living Maximized Living Blog.

Headache disorders are extraordinarily common, yet very few population-based studies exist in spite of the high rates of occurrence in developing countries.  This lack of statistics is due to limited funding and large, often rural populations.  Fortunately, headaches can be significantly reduced through improved lifestyle factors like diet, exercise and stress reduction.

In developed countries, Tension Type Headache (TTH) can affect up to two-thirds of adult males and more than 80 percent of females. Statistics show about 3,000 migraine attacks occur every day per million people and as many as 1 in 20 adults has a headache nearly every day.

What are the types of headaches?

The most frequent types of headaches are migraines, tension and sinus. The symptoms of the headaches differ based on the individual and the unique causative triggers.  The goal should not be limited to treating headaches but preventing them through a proactive approach.

Migraines are common in adults and teenagers.   Symptoms include severe pain either on one or both sides of the head which moves from one area of the skull to another. Migraines are commonly grouped with a series of other symptoms as well.  One can experience an upset stomach, sensitivity to light, sensitivity to sound and moodiness.

The most common form of headache is the Tension Type Headache.  Pain associated with this type of headache commonly extends into the neck, shoulders and the middle of the back.  Poor posture, abnormal sleeping positions, past/current injuries and significant stress levels can all contribute to tension headaches.

Sinus headaches commonly affect individuals during weather changes and seasonal allergen exposure. Sinus headaches are caused by pressure in the nasal passages that can cause fever, eye strain and coughing. The pain is continuous and is commonly mistaken for a migraine type headache.

A cluster headache is the least common – but most severe – type of primary headache.  The intensity of this headache is very high and can be described as a burning or piercing pain.  This constant pain is located behind one eye or in the eye region.  Cluster headaches usually occur at a specific time of day and recur one to three times in a predictable pattern.

Associated Risk Factors Found

Hormonal changes are a common cause of headaches in women. The physical, chemical and emotional stress of puberty, monthly menstrual cycles, pregnancies and menopause require constant hormonal fluctuations throughout life.  Even minor imbalances can be a cause of headaches.

Headaches can also be triggered by specific environmental factors such as exposure to secondhand smoke, fumes from household cleaners, perfumes, exposure to certain allergens and even eating certain foods. Stress, pollution, noise and certain types of lighting are other environmental factors that can trigger headaches.

What Causes Headaches?

Most of the causes of headaches are part of our everyday lives.  The secret to treatment and prevention is to improve how your body is able to respond to the onslaught of triggers.  This improved response can be achieved through dietary factors, quality exercise, stress reduction, proper sleep and adequate hydration levels.

Exercise has been deemed one of the best ways to improve how your body responds to stress.  Engaging in an exercise programme will improve neurology and circulation while reducing the damaging effects of stress.  Exercise helps balance hormones, encourage weight loss and aide in detoxification.

Chiropractic care provides a safe, proven method to help naturally relieve all types of headaches. A study conducted by the Duke University Evidence-based Practice Center evaluated the effects of different types of treatments (medicinal drugs, acupuncture, deep-tissue massage, chiropractic care, etc.) on headaches. The researchers found that cervical spinal manipulation—chiropractic neck adjustment—immediately improved the severity of headaches. Even more telling, continual adjustments were the best option for reducing headaches over an extended period of time.

Chiropractic can lessen pain right now and reduce the frequency of headaches over an extended period of time.
